I haven’t always been very happy with the way my hair looks, but it seems I finally got my hair-care routine on point. So, I’d like to take this opportunity to share my hair-care heroes, a few tips and practices that made a really significant difference in the way that my hair looks.
Before we get started… a little bit about my hair. I have very fine, straight hair. Like many people with this hair type, I have an oily scalp and dry ends. I used to wash my hair every other day, which seemed to aggravate this problem even more. And so, one of the first changes I made was washing my hair less frequently. At first, I was hoping my hair would naturally get used to the new wash cycle, but it did not. What made a different is a Salicylic Acid Exfoliating Scalp Treatment from Inkey List, which is a 10 minute pre-wash treatment designed to balance oil production. Overtime, I noticed that my scalp has gotten a lot less oily, and I am now able to wash my hair every 4-5 days. I only use this treatment twice a month, so that I don’t over dry my scalp.
Another scalp treatment I’ve been using is the SahaScalp Wild Ginger Purifying Scrub from Fable & Mane. I never thought that I would use a scrub on my scalp, but I tried it and loved how my hair looked and felt after. First and foremost, it’s not drying, it gets rid of dirt and buildup but your hair does not feel dry afterwards. I decided to give it a try because it was specifically designed to combat oily scalp and I have to say that it definitely helps to extend the clean-hair feeling. This is also something I do twice a month, so certainly not on every wash and only on wash days when I am not using the Salicylic Acid Exfoliating Scalp Treatment.
I also made switch to a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. Although I have a few favorites, I am currently on my second bottle of Kérastase Discipline Sulfate Free Smoothing Shampoo & 3rd bottle of the Smoothing Conditioner. I love the way these two balance my hair. My hair and scalp feel very clean, and my ends look and feel super smooth and moisturized.
Once every two weeks, I like to do a deep conditioning treatment using the OUAI Treatment Mask for Fine Hair. Usually, I keep it on for about 30 minutes. I know this seems like a commitment, but it makes such an enormous difference. My hair feels like silk after this mask. Typically, I use it on same wash days as the Salicylic Acid Exfoliating Scalp Treatment since this product can make your hair a bit more dry.
Last two things… I made a switch to an AMMONIA-FREE hair-color (Olia by Garnier). I dedicated an entire post talking about why this was such a good decision for me and what difference it made in my hair, so CLICK HERE if you want more detail on this subject.
I tried the Inversion Method and it works! I mean…, it’s not magic, and no, I didn’t see 4 inches of hair growth a month, but overtime my hair became a lot more healthy, shiny and most importantly, it started falling out a lot less than before.
For those of you who are not familiar with the inversion method, it’s a daily practice of turning your head upside down for 4 minutes, while massaging your scalp with an essential oil. The inversion method is said to stimulate hair growth by increasing blood flow to your scalp, and while I didn’t see crazy hair growth, it made a substantial difference!
Quick tip, for those of you with an oily hair scalp like me, try using a hair serum instead of an oil. I really like the Multi-Peptide Serum for Hair Density from the Ordinary. Basically, I tried the inversion method with both: serum and oil, and I’d say both work rather well as long as you are consistent, but the serum of course makes my roots a lot less oily.
