Today, I’m sharing another fave 2021 makeup trend – Dolphin Skin: a dewy, glossy, healthy-looking complexion which can be achieved by a strategically placed highlight!
Intrigued? I sure was, and to tell you the truth, I absolutely loved the end result as well as how easy it was to achieve. First and foremost, start with a good prep. I recommend using a really hydrating eye and skin moisturizer under your base. I swear by Bobbi Brown Priming Moisturizer & Vitamin Enriched Eye Base. If your skin tends to be a bit on the oily side, try using The Indigo Cream by Tatcha. This velvety-rich cream will leave your skin soft, smooth and hydrated, yet it won’t clog your pores or leave your skin feeling greasy.

The right kind of foundation is key for this look. You definitely want a luminous finish, yet you don’t want to end up with an overly shiny face all-over. After playing with a few different products, I found that The Traceless Soft Matte Foundation was perfect for this look. Although it is a matte base, like most Tom Ford foundations, it has a slight glowy finish to it, so it was rather perfect for the look.

I did, however, want a bit more luminosity on certain areas like middle of my chin and cheekbones, so I mixed the foundation with Face & Body Skin Illuminator. I suggest mixing it in equal parts, but really it is entirely up to you. The more you add, the more glow will come through. Lastly, I really suggest adding the Illuminator to key areas only, because for me, the glow looked entirely too strong on my cheeks, nose and forehead.

Finish your base with just a touch of powder. Don’t go too strong, but rather apply your powder with a lighter hand to set your foundation and illuminator in place.

Now comes the really fun part: the highlighter! Powder or Cream? Honestly, I like both and here’s why. I love the look and the finish of a cream highlighter, but creams don’t work on my oilier areas like nose and chin. So typically, I use a powder highlighter on chin, nose and cupid’s bow and opt for a cream on my temples and tops of the cheekbone. In general, where should you place your highlight? Basically, highlight the high points of your face like bridge of your nose, brow bone, temples, tops of the cheekbone, middle of your chin and cupid’s box. But, I highly recommend staying away from your forehead and areas around your nose.

Though you can definitely keep this look just about skin and go for a super natural makeup otherwise, I added a bit of eye drama with a beautiful Extreme Eye Color Quad in Mercurial. Tom Ford eyeshadows are always on another level, but this one just blew me away with shades and the gorgeous finish. Color wise, I love combining Dolphin Skin with natural looking makeup colors like soft pinks, nudes and gold shades. I think this is a rather soft and pretty look and these particular shades tend to accentuate the softness even more. Finishing touch: a natural looking lip (I used NARS lipstick in Instant Crush, a new fave by the way) and dabbed just a bit of Multi Use Lip Gloss in Star Babe to the middle of my lower lip to add dimension and just a bit of sheen.
